Container ship Mary Arctica damaged after hitting an iceberg off Greenland

The Royal Arctic Line’s container ship Mary Arctica hit an iceberg in the waters near Nanortalik in the southernmost of Greenland. The ship was on her way to Aalborg, when the accident occurred. Following the collision, it has been found that the damage to the ship is so severe that a shipyard stay is necessary, stated Royal Arctic Line on their website.

The Royal Arctic Line’s container ship Mary Arctica hit an iceberg in the waters near Nanortalik in the southernmost of Greenland. The ship was on her way to Aalborg, when the accident occurred. Following the collision, it has been found that the damage to the ship is so severe that a shipyard stay is necessary, stated Royal Arctic Line on their website.

However, there is no immediate danger for the seaworthiness of Mary Arctica and no reported oil leak. The goods from the troubled vessel will be transferred to another ship of the company to free space for repairs. The container carrier will dock at Qaqortog for further repairs and class society inspection. Fortunately during the accident there were no injured people from the crew and no reported water ingress.

“Some amount of goods from Mary Arctica will be transferred ship Arina Arctica. However, the capacity of Arina Arctica is smaller and it will be impossible to ship all goods to Aalborg”, said the official statement of Royal Arctic Line. “Food will be prioritized over other goods, and then, in cooperation with the customers the rest goods will be loaded”, adds the statement.

The local authorities initiated investigation for the root cause of the accident. The extend of damages was not released, as well as the time when vessel will not be in service. According to the managing director of the Royal Arctic Line, Verner Hammeken, the repair will take 2 to 3 weeks before the ship can sail again.

During the incident there were no injuries and no water pollution.

The container ship Mary Arctica (IMO: 9311878) has overall length of 112.90 m, moulded beam of 23.30 m and maximum draft of 7.80 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 8,870 DWT and the gross tonnage is 10,308 GRT. The container carrier was built in 2005 by Remontowa shipyard in Gdansk, Poland.
