OMV, Wintershall get go-ahead for Barents Sea drilling

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) has authorized two new exploration wells in the Barents Sea.

The semisubmersible Transocean Spitsbergen will drill appraisal well 7324/7-3 S for OMV in license PL537, west of the Wisting oil discovery.

This will be the fifth well on the license, which includes blocks 7324/7 and 7324/8.

Wintershall Norway has contracted the semisubmersible Transocean Arctic to drill well 7224/2-1 in PL 611, 25 km (15.5 mi) northwest of the Arenaria discovery, and 240 km (149 mi) north of Hammerfest on Norway’s north coast.

This will be the first well on the license which takes in blocks 7223/3, 7223/6, 7224/1, 7224/2, 7224/3, 7224/4, and 7224/5.
