Energy-saving Wärtsilä EnergoProFin propeller cap increases efficiency

Wärtsilä EnergoProFin is a state-of-the-art energy saving solution that increases propeller efficiency and creates fuel savings of up to five percent. The solution is now available for both controllable pitch propellers (CPP) as well as fixed pitch propellers (FPP), yielding the same results in both propeller options. Offering the solution for technologically more challenging CPPs was previously considered impossible in the industry, but is now made possible due to development work by the Wärtsilä hydrodynamics team.

WE Tech of Finland expands into Australia

WE Tech has received an order to deliver its permanent magnet shaft generator solutions to a series of two 12,000 dwt RORO vessels. The vessels are to be built for the Australian shipping company Toll Shipping in Sinotrans & CSC affiliated Jinling Shipyard in China and will operate between Burnie of Tasmania and Melbourne of Victoria in Australia.

Clean Arctic Alliance, Cruise Operators support Arctic HFO ban

Clean Arctic Alliance and the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO) have recently confirmed their support of a ban on heavy fuel oil (HFO) from Arctic shipping and stressed the need for setting IMO a deadline for its work on a new regulation with the aim to phase out Arctic HFO by 2020. MEPC7o meeting left environmental groups optimistic about a potential ban on HFO use in the Arctic.

DNV GL, RCCL and the University of Strathclyde launch new Maritime Safety Research Centre

Glasgow/Hamburg, 18 November 2016. The Maritime Safety Research Centre (MSRC) is an industry-university partnership, involving Strathclyde’s Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean & Marine Engineering, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCCL), and DNV GL. The world’s first centre of its kind, the MSRC will aim to improve safety at sea through a close collaboration between industry and academia, that targets interdisciplinary, common-threaded research and development.
