Mediterranean SOx emission control area study begins

A new study to assess the benefits, costs and feasibility of implementing an emission control area (ECA) to limit sulphur oxides (SOx) from ships in the Mediterranean Sea will consider, among other things, the potential health benefits for people living around the Mediterranean as well as cost implications for ship owners. IMO says its Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea, REMPEC, is coordinating the technical and feasibility study to examine the possibility of designating the Mediterranean Sea, or parts of it, as a SOx-ECA under IMO’s prevention of pollution convention (MARPOL) Annex VI.

Bulk shipping operators rely on MacGregor’s watchful eye to inspect essential equipment

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has recently signed two inspection service agreements with experienced dry bulk shipping operators, ESL Shipping and Wagenborg Shipping, to ensure that essential MacGregor equipment is in good working order and any issues are identified quickly to avoid unexpected downtime.
The first was a three-year service agreement, effective from 1 February, with Finland-based ESL. It will see MacGregor inspect the folding hatch covers and K-cranes fitted onboard a barge and a fleet of nine bulk carriers.

Innovative Wärtsilä HY hybrid modules to provide economic and environmental benefits for Swedish port tug

The technology group Wärtsilä will supply two Wärtsilä HY2 hybrid power modules for a new escort tug being built for the Swedish port of Luleå located on the Gulf of Bothnia in the northern end of the Baltic Sea. The vessel is being built at GONDAN Shipbuilders, in Asturias, Spain, and the order with Wärtsilä was booked in December 2017. When launched in early 2019, it will become the first vessel operating with a Wärtsilä HY solution.
