Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) has broken the South Korean stranglehold in the shipbuilding market and moved into the world’s top five yards.
SWS has amassed an orderbook of 78 ships of a combined 3.03m gt by the end of November, pushing Hyundai Mipo into sixth place, according to Clarksons Platou.
The Chinese yard’s orderbook contains 40 capesize bulkers, with the 23 ships added this year including six 20,988-teu containerships, the world’s largest shipbroker says.
“There are also reports that SWS is to build China’s first cruise ship as part of Carnival’s joint venture with CSSC and Italy’s Fincantieri group, a leading cruise builder,” Clarksons Platou said in a report this week.
DSME continues to lead the global standings with 126 ships of a combined 8.24m gt in its orderbook.
Samsung Heavy Industries sits in second place (90 ships/5.03m gt) narrowly ahead of Hyundai Heavy Industries which has 104 vessels of a combined 5.00m-gt in its back catalogue.
Hyundai Samho is in fourth place with 92 ships totalling 3.03-gt, the report said.
Clarksons Platou places the global orderbook at 295.1m dwt, with contracts running to 82.2m dwt booked in the first 11 months of the year.
