INFUTURE: Potential Cargo Flows and Routing

Saimaa has been in operation for 164 years. Today, the largest cargo flows to Saimaa come from Russia, which is the largest trading partner. The next largest and important are the Netherlands, Estonia, Germany and Latvia, which all have active traffic and trade in the Saimaa region. From Saimaa cargo is exported even as far as France and the United Kingdom. Saimaa’s traffic is not year-round and therefore the freight figures are not comparable with seaports.

Finnlines orders Wärtsilä engines and hybrid systems for its two new eco-friendly ferries

The technology group Wärtsilä has won the contract to supply the engines and a range of its electric solutions for two new ferries under construction at the China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Weihai) in China. The ships are being built for Finnlines, a part of the Grimaldi Group, and are designed to incorporate the latest technical and environmental concepts. The order for the engines was placed in July 2020, with the remaining Wärtsilä equipment ordered in September 2020.

Joint development results in new design for Arc7 LNG Carrier

Aker Arctic, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) and Novatek have jointly developed a state-of-the-art icebreaking LNG carrier to transport liquefied natural gas (LNG) year-round along the Northern Sea Route. DSME has now signed shipbuilding contracts with Sovcomflot and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines for the construction of six Arc7 LNG carriers based on the new design.

Wärtsilä reels in another fishing vessel order

Wärtsilä’s experience and track-record in delivering efficient and sustainable solutions for fishing sector vessels has again been recognised with another important order. The Danish shipbuilder Karstensens Shipyard has awarded Wärtsilä the contract to deliver the main propulsion machinery for an 89 metres long pelagic purser/trawler being built for Faroe Islands based Christian i Grótinum, a leading North Atlantic fishing group. The order was booked in July this year.
